FAMILY DAY AT FORT FOSTER WAS a GREAT SUCCESS!
Perfect weather, beautiful beaches, places to explore and plenty of good food. That describes the day of the trip to Fort Foster that several families from Whittier Falls took part in. The water was pretty cold but some of the kids didn't seem to mind. I guess they were having too much fun!
RAD, WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
Public Housing units across the country have been underfunded by Congress for many years. In most cases housing authorities have received substantially less funding then they need and this long history of underfunding has placed many public housing developments at risk. In fact, public housing units across the country need more than $26 billion in repairs. In response to these needs, Congress enacted the Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) in order to preserve and improve public housing buildings. RAD allows housing authorities to improve and modernize HUD-ssisted properties. This also provides an opportunity to bring in a fresh perspective and change the way people think about public housing. It would be difficult to argue that affordable housing isn't necessary, but pre-conceived ideas and misconceptions about public housing residents can lead to stereotyping and stigma. We are hoping change that, but we need your help.
One of the concerns about public housing that frequently comes up is a fear that the buildings will be allowed to fall into disrepair and people will lose value in their properties. We are expecting to tart remodel the homes at Whittier Falls which will improve them. We expect to start this fal and unfortunately, in order to make these improvements temporary relocation is going to be necessary. Living in the midst of remodeling is never easy, but the process of getting there will go smoother if we work together.
There is a connection between the quality of housing and the quality of life. Let's take this opportunity for new beginnings and transform Dover Housing Authority to Whittier Falls, a respected community in Dover.
The Summer RAD Update meetings will continue in 2017 and will be held every Wednesday during of at noon. Residents are invited to meet at the picnic table at the DHA Office.
